Interfacing Jaxtr and Ring Central PBX
Design and beta testing of an interface between Jaxtr and RingCentral’s Virtual PBX system started today. If you are not familiar with Jaxtr or RingCentral we invite you to visit their web sites. You can find both links below this article. Jaxtr links your phone to the web, so you can hear from callers worldwide while keeping your existing phone number private. RingCentral receives your call from Jaxtr and processes the call, including features such as a virtual PBX, music on hold, call routing, and FAX capabilities.
Callers can reach a jaxtr user without having a jaxtr account of their own. Once the first call is initiated, jaxtr provides the caller with a unique and permanent number, which can be used to phone the same person in the future, even when they’re not online or near their computer. Additionally, these calls can be made without incurring long distance charges on both domestic and international calls, including calls from a mobile phone.
RingCentral users are provided with a toll free number or a local number which can be anywhere in your country. We selected a California telephone number but we are not in California. You cannot forward Jaxtr calls to toll free numbers at this time. RingCentral users also get 5 extensions or departments for their virtual PBX. We discuss them later.
RingCentral users must configure their account to pass the first Jaxtr call through to your phone. You will be required to enter a code provided by Jaxtr which verifies that the number is correct. RingCentral settings for business hours, after hours settings, and call forwarding settings must be correct for this to happen. Remember to set your Jaxtr privacy settings to answer all calls, and forward the calls to your RingCentral number.
After you confirm your number with Jaxter you can configure the RingCentral Virtual PBX. You’ll have all the power and functionality of a Fortune 500 phone system but with no hardware to buy and maintain. Be aware that you should read and understand Jaxtr’s abuse policies and terms of service. The jaxtr Services are for the personal use of Members only and may not be used in connection with any commercial endeavors except those that are specifically endorsed or approved by jaxtr in writing.
For our test we assume there is only one personal user, but here is how you can use the virtual PBX to your advantage. Our example situation takes the caller to a RingCentral selection menu of five choices. Here are the choices:
1. If you are calling from MySpace press 1
2. If you are calling from Facebook press 2
3. If you are calling from eBay press 3
4. If you are calling from CraigsList press 4
5. To hear my announcements press 5
Why these choices? Perhaps you have a MySpace account, your wife has a Facebook account, your Dad does eBay, and your car is for sale on CraigsList. Use the virtual PBX to route calls accordingly. Also be aware that you might want to give your RingCentral number to callers in your own country, while international callers can be routed through Jaxtr.
Disclaimer: As I said in the intro this is a beta test. There might be bugs in our interface so make your decisions accordingly. There are no guarantees at this point. Jaxtr and/or RingCentral could change their policies or other factors could change the functionality of our testing. We talked to RingCentral tech support twice already.
